Killevy

County Armagh

St Monnina (517) (also called Darerca or Bline) built a wooden church on this mountain site about 450 for herself and a few of her nuns. ‘Killevy’ means ‘church of the mountain’; (= Slieve Gullion). Stone churches were built later. The church with the impressive doorway may date from 9C though the doorway have come from an earlier building. The size of the other church, which dates from the 15C, shows how popular this place was with pilgrims. Monnina and her nuns were great lovers of the poor.

There is a holy well 600m up the hillside marked by a large white cross visible from the church. St Monnina’s grave is to be found in the churchyard.

The cross slab inside the church is 13C.
