St Colman Mac Duagh (d 632) was a hermit in a cave below the wild limestone cliffs of Slievecarran at a place known as “Eagles Rock”. There is a church, 2 outdoor altars and holy well.
The path to the site is called the ‘way of the dishes’ because St Colman once fed his hungry servant on food that flew off from the local king’s table along this way. The servant’s grave with altars and slabs can be found nearby. The king, being somewhat naturally surprised, asked St Colman to found the great monastery of Kilmacduach (qv) not far away near Gort.
