St Fachnan founded a monastery here at S end of Lough Derg.

St Flannan (639) followed him as abbot.

Beside St Flannan’s cathedral is a 12C church.

There is a High Cross inside the Cathedral that once stood in Kilfenora (qv).

There is also an Ogham stone with, unusually, both Ogham and Runic writing on it. There is a Holy Well in the garden of the AIB bank opposite.

St Molua (606) founded a monastery on Friars Island in the Shannon; the church has been moved to Killaloe which is named after him = Cill-da-lua.

The chancel part of the church may have been built to house a relic of St Molua; its stone roof is original.
