St Columba founded the monastery here. St Mura was abbot in the early 7C. There is a very important 7C Cross Slab carved on both sides and in the form of Latin Cross with a long stem giving the appearance of a Greek Cross or 9C Cross Slab carved with interlace on both sides and in the form of Latin Cross with a long stem giving the appearance of a Greek Cross. It has, very unusually, an inscription in Greek, “Glory and honour to the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit”. This formula was sanctioned by the Council of Toledo in the 7C, though it was in use before that.. It has, unusually, an inscription in Greek, “Glory and honour to the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit”. There is a Cross Slab and a bullaun stone in the wall of the Church. The Church itself is 17C. The shrine of St. Mura’s Bell and Crozier is in the National Museum; the original is in the Catholic Church at Lagg.
