County Down

There was an early monastery on the mound of Down, and another on an island across the river, (where Inch Abbey now stands). Excavations have revealed a date before 800.

A stone in the graveyard of the Church of Ireland Cathedral marks the spot where, it is said, relics of Patrick, Brigit and Columba, were buried. The traditions about his burial place vary.

There is a Holy Cross and a Cross Slab and fragments inside the Cathedral and several slabs from elsewhere, notably from Saul (qv), in the Down Museum.

OS: 21 476 444 Cathedral
