St Jarlath (550), a disciple of St Enda founded a monastery here The 12/13C church ruin, called Temple Jarlath, lies to the NW of the CI St Mary’s cathedral.

In the Cathedral there is a 12C High cross (made from 2 pieces, a head and a base and shaft, the latter cross was commissioned by Turlough (Mor) O’Conor) High King of Ireland. Tuam became a Diocese at the Council of Kells.

In addition there is the shaft of a 12C High Cross and a splendid 12C Romanesque archway.

Further there is a 12C Cross head in the adjacent Synod Hall. Access has to be requested from the Diocese.
