St Brigit (d 524), the most famous female saint of Ireland, founded the double monastery of Cill Dara for both men and women. The cathedral stands on the site and on either side of the High Altar lay the tombs of St Brigit and St Conleth the Abbot. There is the site of the (restored) fire temple, a Round Tower (which one can climb to the top) and a Holy Well and Holy Tree to the south of the town.
