Croghan Hill
County Offaly
St Maccaille, bishop, in the mid 5C, set up a church just below the summit of Croghan Hill. The Hill is an extinct volcano and the place of an ancient burial ground. As a sacred mountain it was one of the first places in Ireland to be Christianised. It is said his mother was St Darerca, sister of St Patrick. St Brigit is said to have received the veil from him.
