Kells

County Meath

The monastery belonged to the federation of the monks of St Columba (597) when they returned from Iona in 804 to escape the Vikings. The Book of Kells was finished here. There are 3 High Crosses, a Round Tower, 2 Cross Slabs and a Sundial all within the enclosure, with another Cross down by the Heritage Centre. St Columba’s House is still intact which was built to house his relics.
